Ever walked into a home that felt more like a showroom than a place where real people live? It might have been beautiful, but did it feel personal? Many homes today follow trends so closely that they lose any sense of individuality. Your home should tell your story, not someone else’s.
I believe in designing spaces that reflect who you are, what you love, and how you live. So, how do you move beyond generic interiors and create a home that feels unmistakably you? Here’s how to bring personality into your space without looking like a jumble of random objects.
Find Your Style (Without Blindly Following Trends)
Trends can be a great source of inspiration, but following them too closely can leave your home feeling like a carbon copy of a Pinterest board. Instead, think about what truly resonates with you.
A great place to start? Look at:
✔️ Your wardrobe. Are you drawn to bold colours or neutral tones? Do you prefer classic tailoring or a bohemian style? Your home could reflect a similar vibe.
✔️ Your favourite hotels or holiday spots. Do you love a Moroccan riad's rich textiles, the Scandinavian design's clean lines, or the relaxed elegance of a Mediterranean villa?
✔️ Artwork that speaks to you. What colours, textures, and moods attract you?
Once you pinpoint what makes you feel at home, making design choices that align with your personality becomes easier.
Incorporate Meaningful Pieces
A room might be perfectly styled but can feel soulless without meaningful touches. Personal pieces bring warmth and a sense of history to your space.
Consider adding:
● Family heirlooms or sentimental objects: A vintage lamp from your grandmother, an antique mirror, or even a well-loved book collection can add charm.
● Travel souvenirs: Rather than keeping them in a drawer, display those beautiful ceramics from Portugal, woven baskets from Africa, or artwork from a street market in Paris. I love to display my finds from my travels, like the masks I have hung in my living room at home. (see the photo above).
● Custom or DIY pieces: A hand-painted cabinet, a reupholstered chair in a bold fabric, or a framed collection of personal photographs can make your space feel unique. If you have a piece of furniture that you want to customise but need a helping hand with, don’t hesitate to contact the Knox Design team, who will be delighted to help you.
It’s not about cluttering your home with things but choosing items that tell your story.
Colour & Texture: The Secret to Expressing Personality
Colour is one of the easiest ways to inject personality into a space. Even if you prefer neutral walls, there are countless ways to add colour through soft furnishings, art, and accessories.
● Go bold where it counts. A statement wall in deep teal or mustard yellow, vibrant cushions, or a dramatic rug can add life to a space. If you are stuck for inspiration, browse the fabric room at Knox Design Homestore and let your imagination go wild!
● Mix textures. A blend of linen, velvet, wood, and metal adds depth and warmth. Smooth, sleek surfaces feel contemporary, while natural, imperfect textures create a more organic feel.
● Layering is key. Combining different materials makes A room look more ‘finished’. Think of a woven rug, a plush throw, and wooden side tables all in one space.
Not sure where to start? I take much inspiration from nature—Mallorca’s sea, sky, and landscapes offer a perfect colour palette. So, if you are on the island, all you need to do is look outside!
Customisation is Key
The fastest way to make your home feel unique? Mix your purchases with vintage pieces, custom-made furniture, or repurposed items.
● Bespoke furniture. A custom-built bookcase, a reupholstered armchair, or a made-to-measure dining table instantly elevates your space.
● Small but mighty tweaks. Change standard cabinet handles for unique ones, replace generic light fixtures with statement pendants, or swap out basic door knobs for something special.
● Reimagine what you already own. An old dresser can be painted, a basic sofa can get a facelift with new cushions, and a plain headboard can be covered in fabric to add a designer touch.
These small changes can have a significant impact without requiring a full redesign.
Break the Rules (With Intention)
Design rules are helpful guidelines, but they’re not set in stone. Some of the most beautiful, personality-filled homes break conventional design ‘rules’ in the best way possible.
● Here are some to consider ignoring:
"Stick to one style". Mixing modern, vintage, minimalist, eclectic, industrial and bohemian can create a dynamic, interesting space.
● "Neutrals are best for resale". If you plan to stay in your home for a while, design it for you, not for the next owner.
● "Symmetry is essential". Sometimes, the best interiors feel collected and slightly imperfect rather than overly staged.
The key is to break the rules intentionally: if it makes you happy, it works.
At the end of the day, a home should evolve over time. It’s never truly finished—and that’s what makes it feel alive. Adding personal touches, layering textures, and embracing colour will make your space feel more like you.
So, take a look around your home and think, what’s missing? A pop of colour? A piece that tells a story? A little more you? Don’t know how to start? That’s where I come in!
