A stylish guest room doesn’t just impress – it shows you care.
When designing a guest bedroom in your home, the details always count. This room is more than just a spare space… it is an invitation to share your home with your nearest and dearest. A place that reflects your style, hospitality, and how you make people feel welcome. Whether your guests stay overnight or with you for an extended break, the aim is simple: you want them to feel instantly at ease, thoroughly spoiled, and reluctant to leave.
Start with the essentials: A great bed and thoughtful lighting.
The bed is always the hero of the bedroom, and as such, it needs to be beautifully dressed and ready to deliver. A supportive mattress, a coordinating headboard, and comfortable pillows are the essential starting points. Layering the bed with crisp linens, a sumptuous throw, and elegant accent pillows are the final touches that say, ‘I’ve thought of you.’
Lighting is equally important. Overhead lighting has its place, but don’t rely on it alone. Bedside lamps and wall lights—ideally on a dimmer—will allow your guests to create their own mood. Don’t forget blackout blinds or lined curtains, just in case your guest is a late riser.
Create a sense of calm and character.
The guest room should always feel calm and relaxing, but never bland. The team at Knox Design have many years’ experience creating unique spaces and can help you add that finishing touch you never knew was missing. We know instinctively when a space needs textured layers that invite the senses, artwork that adds personality, or maybe a statement piece of furniture that brings the room together. Whether it’s a velvet bench at the foot of the bed or a fabulous mirror on the wall, Knox Design can help you choose pieces that feel curated and not thrown together.
We love to use natural materials like rattan, wood, and linen to create a tactile, relaxed atmosphere. Of course, colour, when used correctly, can really elevate the space without becoming overpowering.
Function meets finesse
Storage might not be glamorous, but it is an essential fact of life. Guests need somewhere to unpack and feel settled, even if it’s just a luggage rack, a small wardrobe with a few quality hangers, or a drawer or two for essentials. A chair or bench will give guests somewhere to sit or place their bag, and a mirror is non-negotiable—ideally, it should be full-length.
Add the little luxuries.
The best part of designing a guest room is adding the finishing touches. A scented candle or reed diffuser brings an instant sense of calm. A spare robe hanging on a fancy hook on the back of the door; some inspirational books, fresh flowers and a carafe of water with a couple of glasses on the bedside table - these thoughtful details show you’ve thought things through. A spare phone charger tucked in a drawer? Bonus points.
At Knox Design, we understand that hosting is an art, and your guest room should reflect that. With the right blend of comfort, function, and a touch of luxury, you will create a space your guests will talk about long after they’ve gone home.
